Investigate Prison Riot MontanaThe 1959 Montana Jail conflict came to a rather violent climax on April 16 when prisoner Myles and his bad accomplices Lee Smart and George Alton seized some rifles from the guard catwalks in both cellhouses! Jerry Myles had done jail time at Alcatraz Island and in several other federal and state prisons in the USA. This got him known as a 'career criminal' in the USA. Investigators learned that Jerry Myles didn’t actually want to get out of prison, but he wanted the glory of dominance. In Myles' mind Powell and the Deputy Warden, Ted Rothe, had both shamed him and he was going to show everyone at the prison who was boss! The violent Montana prison riot tore apart many of the corrective services officers and men involved and brought anguish to their long suffering families. Jerry Myles was a criminal psychopath who had led a mutiny at the federal prison in Atlanta, Georgia, and then had watched a fatal escape attempt at Alcatraz, San Francisco. He was 'a riot leader in training,' officials thought. What he did to gain control of Montana State Prison was hauntingly similar to what he’d seen happen at Alcatraz Island prison, California. It is reported after investigation that the trouble started when Warden Powell and Deputy Warden Rothe decided to end the con boss system that Myles dearly loved. (The convict Myles was in charge of the garment shop at the time.. ) When they did, they upset the balance of power in the prison. That's what motivated the infamous riot. In the 1950s, U.S. prison wardens wanted to make their prisons appear more progressive, and so they shifted the balance of power more toward the custodial staff. Generally in prisons, any shift in routines causes trouble, because of 'dominance sensitivities' in the perception of the prisoners. Warden Powell knew little of the seriousness of Myles' previous offending and of his behavior at Alcatraz. The Montana riot reportedly succeeded because prisoners Myles and Smart seized rifles that guards carried on the catwalks in both cell houses. Unfortunately, one of the rifles had ammunition. The riot had fatal consequences and went down in American jail disturbance history as one of the worst ever. Displaying part of article Get all the information
